Nevis to receive additional funds from Federal Government

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - ON the eve of the three Leaders of the governing coalition meeting, the Government has approved additional sums of money for the island of Nevis, which is likely from proceeds of the Citizenship By Investment (CBI) programme.

That was confirmed in a Post Cabinet statement published by the St. Kitts-Nevis Information Service, which noted that the decision was made at Monday’s (Apr. 11) Cabinet Meeting chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris.

No disclosure was made on the amount that was agreed on, but that may be welcomed by some as the three Leaders meet today (Apr. 14) to iron out their differences.

Premier and Leader of the Concerned Citizens Movement, Mark Brantley has been very vocal that Nevis is not receiving its fair share of the proceeds from the CBI programme, and the agreed upon percentage that was signed onto in the Charlestown Accord.

He went a step further to present data which highlighted that since 2015, the Federation received $2.9 billion and Nevis was given only a little more 10 percent, shorter than the 25 percent agreed upon.

“Over that period then, from 2007 until 2021, the island of Nevis received 7.2 percent  of CBI receipts for a population of 25 percent,” Brantley said at his March 2022 press conference.

Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the People’s Action Movement, Shawn Richards also commented on the fair share discussion, pointing out that the Government is not giving Nevis the required percentage as agreed upon.

He also chastised the Prime Minister, disclosing that he was unaware of the amounts Nevis received under the CBI programme.

In his December 2021 Budget presentation, Leader of the People’s Labour Party and Prime Minister, Dr, Harris disclosed that despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Federation made $588 million under the programme, .

With the Leaders meeting today, all attention will be placed on whether any concrete agreements will be made going forward.

Many political critics and pundits believe that with the name-callings and airing of the proverbial dirty laundry from within the current administration, it is rather difficult to see them rebuilding.
