Minister of Health in the Nevis Island Administration Hon Jean Harris |
CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (January 31, 2005) -- Minister of Health in the Nevis Island Administration Hon Jean Harris has welcomed the assistance promised to the Alexandra Hospital by a hotel developer on Nevis, citing that the assistance would enhance the health services already available on the island.
Mrs Harris made the comment on Monday following a recent announcement by Mr Evik Jorn Project Leader of Hamilton Estates Development Company Ltd who is currently involved in a hotel development at Hamilton Estate.
A representative of Carino Limited has met and discussed with Dr Rawlins the Medical Chief of Staff, their help for the Alexandra Hospital and the people of Nevis to provide orthopaedic surgery.
"At the moment people of Nevis have to travel to other parts of the Caribbean mostly Trinidad to access this service. The representative has seen the theatre and so his company is quite aware of what type of equipment is needed. This assistance would be a boost to our health care services if that type of service is offered at the hospital," she said.
According to Minister Harris, once the equipment is received arrangements would be made with the Orthopaedist in Trinidad to visit Nevis to perform the surgery.
Meantime, Mr Jorn said noted that the Spa Centre would form part of the hotel and villa facility would be ready in time for the World Cup cricket.
He said that 90 percent of the spa centre's drawings were already completed and that top athletes worldwide had indicated their willingness to come to Nevis for surgery and recuperation if needed.
Mr Jorn confirmed that he had held discussions with Dr Rawlings and that he had received a list of equipment necessary for different types of surgery. He said that his company had taken the decision to upgrade the Alexandra hospital for all the people of Nevis instead of building a theatre at the Spa Centre "that means a lot for us and it also means a lot for the government and this island," he said.
The company which is locally registered is at present constructing 21 villas at Hamilton 75 percent of which Mr Jorn said had already been sold out to clients as far as Europe.
