Tuesday, November 3 – Government, through the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) continues to help empower local organisations.
The latest beneficiary of such assistance is the BVI Amateur Radio League (BVIARL) which through the help of Government and the Overseas Territories Programme Fund (OTPF) received and installed a VHF Repeater System.
This repeater will allow local, visiting and international amateur radio operators to communicate during peace time and emergencies. The system covers the entire Territory making it very effective.
Local amateur radio operators have been testing the system in recent weeks to ensure its functionality. Amateur radio operation is a hobby enjoyed by many throughout the world, utilising a system that allows them to communicate via various means with repeater systems being one of them.
In addition to being the hobby of some, amateur radio is also the primary means used by officials of the DDM and other emergency response agencies to communicate during times of emergency.
The BVIARL has expressed sincere gratitude to the Government of the Virgin Islands, in particular the DDM, the Governor’s Office and members of the local private sector who contributed to the success of this project.
The league has promised to use the system to provide assistance to the Virgin Islands community and to promote the hobby of Amateur Radio Communications in the Territory.
