BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - POLICE have narrowed their investigations into the fire that damaged a section of the Joshua Obadiah Williams Primary School back in March, and a female was charged for the offence.
A blaze had engulfed a section of the educational institution on March 18, which damaged a number of classrooms and had forced officials to relocate students to another location for the continuation of classes.
Resultant of their investigations, police have charged 42-year-old Andrea Greene of Molineaux for the offence of Setting Fire to a Public Building.
Police said that Greene was charged on May 27, 2022 and that she remains in police custody.
During his visit to the educational institution after the blaze, Acting Chief Education Officer, Francil Morris described the fire as an attack on education in the Federation.
“But I want to say that we will bounce back because of the support that we have been given, not only from the community but from the entire Federation. A number of persons have come on board and they are willing to do their very best to make sure that our children do not lose too much of their learning. And so I [am] happy for that from an education standpoint,” he was quoted as saying by the Office of the Prime Minister.
In similar vein, the Director of the Public Works Department, George Gilbert, also back in March, revealed the extent of the damage to the institution.
“We have to now upgrade the whole structure, the electrical in particular, and what I’ve seen and observed is that there has been some structural cracks in the building. We don’t know if those were there before or as a result of the fire, but those will have to be addressed in going forward. We saw that the plaster work on the walls in many areas are flaking, so we have to address that as we go forward too,” he was quoted by OPM as saying.
