Committee steps up preparation for Music Festival

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - PREPARATION is now being stepped up for the staging of the 2022 St. Kitts Music Festival which is scheduled to be held later this month, with the organisers set to begin building the stage and testing the sound systems.

But even as they begin the ground work, the threat posed by the increasing number of COVID cases could upend the Festival.

Despite that though, the Committee has confirmed that there would be no mask mandate, but reminded that it is a personal responsibility of each patron attending the event to protect themselves, since the organisers would provide hand sanitizers at the gate.

However, the Committee acknowledged the realities, and when asked about contingencies in place should there be an outbreak, Chairman Damon Hobson stated that there is no Plan B for the event, but noted that organisers would be guided by health officials.

That announcement comes as the Federation was expected to be placed on the CDC’s Level 3 status due to the rising number of COVID cases.

COVID-19 is not the only issue that officials will have to deal with when it comes to the Festival. Concerns have been raised over the years, at the Music Festival and other fetes, about underage drinking.

Superintendent of Police Travis Rogers reaffirmed that it is against the law to engage in underage drinking at any event, and called on all persons, including media practitioners, to report any instances of such at the event.

Meanwhile, the Committee is expecting patrons to have an enjoyable experience, and the layout is also expected to be different.

According to Hobson, unlike in 2019 when the stage was erected East to West, this year it would be from North to South. The change was based on technical recommendations put forward by the company that won the bid to provide the service.

This year’s Music Festival will run from June 23-25 at the Kim Collins Athletics Stadium, starting at 7:00 p.m. nightly with the cutoff being 1:30 a.m.
