Grant: Douglas one-track approach to economic development failing nation

Lindsay Grant
PAM Secretariat

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, November 6th 2009 (PAM Secretariat) – Leader of the People’s Action Movement Lindsay Grant on Wednesday said that the Government has one string to its economic bow - “borrow money”.

Grant declared that all the PM could boast about is his ability to borrow money from various countries and lending institutions, which plunges the Federation into further financial and economic troubles.

Describing St. Kitts and Nevis’ economy as being in a comatose stage, Grant said, “Our comatose economy now seems to depend on borrowed money with not much else in the offing…Dr. Denzil Douglas must and should  be strongly criticized for this one-track approach to St. Kitts and Nevis’s economic development.”

The PAM Leader pointed out that instead of focusing on the known foreign exchange earners - tourism, agriculture and the manufacturing sectors as well as trying to increase value-added production and investment, “Douglas is running all over the world in an attempt to create the impression that he is a good leader, but we are aware of his continued failure as leader of this Federation”.

Grant said it is evident that the PM’s one-man crusade is certainly bound for failure. “It is evident that St. Kitts and Nevis would have suffered opportunity costs in his failure to take initiatives to increase Foreign Direct Investment in those proven areas/sectors so vital to our economy.”

He claimed that worst of all, while Douglas is Minister of National Security crime and violence has spiraled out of control with no person being safe anymore in the Federation. He added that another wrong approach being made by the Prime Minister is that he refuses to allow key and important stakeholders to play a pivotal role in key decision-making.

“We continue to see the enormous failures of the Douglas government, and it is a proven fact that in every ministry he serves there are failures,” Grant said.

Commenting on what he claims as Douglas’s attempts to delay the calling of elections, Grant said it’s evident that after the chimera by the PM, the Federation would certainly have a new government.

Grant declared that “the writings are on the walls” and he is confident that sooner or later the PM could not continue running. He further declared that elections would be held and the people of this Federation would determine who they want to run their affairs for the next five years, adding that the actions of PM Douglas could only be described as a “desperate man wanting to remain in power”.
