KINGSTON, 13 July 2022 – On Thursday, July 14, 2022, the Caribbean Policy Research Institute (CAPRI) will launch its latest report “Breaking News: Gender-based Violence in Jamaican News Media”. The web forum will commence at 8pm and last for one hour, and will be live streamed to the public via CAPRI’s YouTube channel, Facebook page and PBCJ’s YouTube channel as well as their flow cable channel #105.

Jamaica has the second-highest rate of femicide (intentional homicide of females) and one of the world's highest rates of intimate partner violence. While the causes of GBV are complex, cultural attitudes have been found to contribute significantly to the scale and nature of violence against women and girls, and the reactions and responses to it. There is a proven link between media consumption and cultural attitudes, with the news media playing a key role in the development and reinforcement of social beliefs, individual behaviours, and policy development.

Research Assistant, Ms. Dominique Graham will deliver a presentation on the representation of gender-based violence (GBV) in Jamaican media, with an aim to identify the potential of gender sensitive reporting as an approach to its representation in Jamaica.

Following the presentation, Dr. Diana Thorburn, Director of Research at CAPRI, will moderate a panel discussion where she will be joined by:

    • Dr Karen Carpenter, Head & Senior Lecturer, Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS)

    • Mr. George Davis, Head, Press Association of Jamaica

Panelists will share their remarks on the report as well as answer questions from the audience.

After the launch, the report will be available for download on CAPRI’s website.
