Grenadians condemn attack on star athlete

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - MANY Grenadians and the local Olympic Committee are up in arms over what they described as an “inhumane” attack on one of the territory's star athletes on Tuesday night (Aug. 9).

Anderson Peters, Grenada’s World Champion, was assaulted while at an event where he sustained non-life threatening injuries to his body.

According to reports out of St. George’s, Peters was assaulted by five males.

In condemning the attack, the Grenada Olympic Association reported that it is saddened by the news of the “cowardly” act towards one of the nation’s sporting hero and icon.

Peters is the reigning Javelin World Champion, copping the global title last month at the IAAF World Championship in Eugene.

And that is not sitting well with the Grenada Olympic Committee.

”The Grenada Olympic Committee joins with all of Grenada in condemning these barbaric actions and looks forward to the relevant authorities taking decisive action against all the perpetrators,” the statement read.

The Royal Grenada Police Force in a statement on the incident confirmed that World Javelin Champion Anderson Peters was involved in the incident, noting that it occurred aboard the vessel ‘Harbour Master’.

“Peters is presently receiving medical attention for minor injuries. Several crew members of the said vessel are in Police custody assisting with investigations,” the police statement read.

The New National Party (NNP) also denounced the act.

In a statement today, the Party said: “The New National Party registers its dismay regarding an incident involving acts of violence meted out to our beloved double World Javelin Champion, Anderson Peters which occurred Wednesday 10th August, 2022”.
NNP, while denouncing the incident, noted that all acts of violence should not be tolerated.

“Grenada is marked by its peaceful nature and without a doubt, we subscribe to the rule of law. We anticipate a swift judicial process and justice in accordance with the laws of Grenada.”

Police in St. George’s are still probing the incident.
