BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - QUICK responses by the Fire and Rescue Services and members of the St. Kitts Electrical Company Limited yesterday (Aug. 27) prevented a fire from destroying the power station in Basseterre.
That fire had left residents and business entities from the South East Pennisula to Sandy Point without electricity.
A statement from the power company explained that there was a fire on a ring main unit at the Needsmust Power Station around 5:30 a.m.
“Thanks to the quick reaction of the operations staff with the assistance of the Fire Department they were able to contain and [put] out the fire,” the statement posted to social media read.
According to SKELEC, the fire resulted in 60 percent of the island being without electricity and that work was being done to restore same.
The outage had affected the feeders on Port Zante, Sandy Point SEP 1, Canada Estate, Industrial Site and Frigate Bay .
True to its word, SKELEC had restored electricity to all affected areas late yesterday afternoon.
Back in 2020 a major fire broke out at the same facility and the entire island was without electricity. That fire had damaged a section of the company’s equipment and restoration had taken several hours.
