Nevis Circuit Criminal Assizes begins

    CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – FIVE matters are scheduled to be heard by Her Ladyship Ianthea Leigertwood-Octave at the Nevis Circuit November Criminal Assizes, which began yesterday (Nov. 9).

     

    Three of the matters were transferred from the April Assizes while the others will be heard for the first time.

     

    The first case heard was that of James Ham, who pleaded not guilty to rape and burglary. The others scheduled are that of Santo Domingo native Sandy Nisbett, who is facing a murder charge; Shawn Herbert, called Dwight Webbe and World Cup, who appeared to answer charges of causing and inflicting grievous bodily harm; and Duran Grant and Lindsay Douglas, who are charged with separate counts of unlawful carnal knowledge.

     

    Nisbett could not plea because he was unrepresented, but he will have a lawyer appointed; Herbert had a not a not guilty plea entered after he pleaded guilty in self defense; while Grant and Douglas, both represented by Dr. Henry Browne, pleaded not guilty.

     

    A 12-member jury was selected from the 30 present to start the assizes in the case against Ham, who is represented by Jason Hamilton. The panel consists of six men and women.
