Basseterre, St. Kitts (September 26, 2022) – Hon. Konris Maynard, Minister of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) is among the delegation for the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-22) held in Bucharest, Romania. The conference begins today, Monday 26th 2022 at the Palace of the Parliament in the Romanian capital.
Traveling with the Minister of ICT are Permanent Secretary in Ministry of ICT, Mrs. Cheryleann Pemberton, E-Government Coordinator in Ministry of ICT, Mr. Sancho Duncan and Network Coordinator in Ministry of ICT, Mr. Tristan Vasquez.
Hon. Konris Maynard will be having multiple bilateral meetings with corresponding ministries across the globe to develop and strengthen relationships in aide of our thrust toward Digital Transformation, including E-Governance and National Digital ID systems.
In speaking of the conference, the Minister stated, “Thirteen (13) Caribbean countries will be represented at the conference with about sixty-five (65) delegates providing our full support behind Bahamian Candidate for the Telecommunications Development Bureau (BDT), Mr. Stephen Bereaux. The Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) meetings in Bahamas earlier in September that I attended was part of preparation for this Plenipotentiary.”
The International Telecommunication Union, which started in 1865, is the oldest UN Agency. The Plenipotentiary Conference is held every four (4) years and is the highest policy-making body of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). 3,300 delegates from around 170 countries of the ITU member states will meet to decide on the future role of the organization and determine the organizations’ ability to influence and affect the advancement of information and communication technologies across the globe.
During the conference the senior management team, the member states of the council, and the members of the Radio Regulations Board of the ITU will be elected. The conference also establishes the Union’s general policies and the strategic and financial plans for the next four years.
