King Socrates returns to the calypso arena with ‘Let Justice Reign’

By: Suelika N. Creque, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOUR-TIME National Calypso Monarch Sylvester Hodge, popularly as King Socrates, recently released a new calypso called ‘Let Justice Reign’ for the upcoming Senior Monarch Competition during this year’s Carnival season.

The ‘True Calypsonian’ singer said that he stayed out of the competition last year so that he could return strong in 2009. Known for his popular socio-political commentaries, ‘Let Justice Reign’ speaks to the recent court matters between the two major political parties in St. Kitts and Nevis.

“It also speaks to the PM’s claims on why elections have not been called as yet,” he said.

Hodge said that he would be releasing two more songs shortly and that would be his contribution to Carnival this year. When asked about his thoughts on the reigning Calypso King’s [Konris Maynard] decision that he would not be competing in this year’s competition, Hodge said that he think it was a wise decision.

“If I were in his shoes I might have done the same thing. He has a great career of being undefeated and so as not to become monotonous, he chose to take a break. He is breaking on a good note,” Hodge said.

Hodge, who is also Manager of the Legends Tent, said that the calypso buzz begins this week with the launch of the first calypso tent. On Thursday, Nov. 12, the tent will be at Potential Bar; then on Friday, Nov. 13 at Bobsy’s Bar and Grill and at Sprat Net on Saturday, Nov. 14.

The Legends Tent has been the first to launch since its inception seven years ago and is this year sponsored by LIME, Carib Breweries, S L Horsfords and Heavy Moovers.
