BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A male juvenile is currently nursing a gunshot wound at the JNF General Hospital while a member of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force was treated for a wound and discharged from the same medical institution.

Reports reaching this media house early this morning (Nov. 14) state that a police officer was wounded in the head while intervening in an altercation on the Frigate Bay Strip, which resulted in him shooting his assailant in the abdomen.

When contacted, the Police Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Vaughan Henderson, confirmed occurrence of the incident and stated that the juvenile was shot in the left abdomen.

“At about 2:55 a.m. [today) at the Frigate Bay Strip, police recognised that there was an altercation between a group of young persons. They suspected the altercation to be a gang fight.

“Bottles and stones were being thrown and police intervened to break up the altercation. A 17-year-old male attacked and wounded a police officer. He was about to wound the officer again and the police officer immediately drew his service pistol and discharged a round. The juvenile was wounded. Both the injured juvenile and the officer were taken to the JNF Hospital but the officer was treated and discharged while the juvenile was detained,” Henderson said.

He also informed that the juvenile was arrested, is under police’s watch and charges of “wounding with intent” are likely to be made against him.

Henderson further stated that investigations into the initial altercation among the group of young persons are ongoing.
