Hamilton: Workers are key to agriculture sector survival

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, November 14th 2009 (PAM Secretariat) - Deputy Political Leader of the People’s Action Movement, Eugene Hamilton is of the firm view that the Federation’s plan to revive the agriculture sector, which he said continues to slip into stagnation under the guidance of the Hon. Cedric Liburd, does not involve workers losing their jobs but rather making adjustments to ensure its viability.

Hamilton’s statements were recently made after receiving numerous complaints from farmers, who are claiming that the Hon. Libud continues to fail them in proper representation. Hamilton disclosed that the Government has failed to spend adequate monies to expand capabilities in the industry.

Hamilton noted that had the Government sought to spend properly in the sector, farmers would have been generating immense benefits by now, noting that this is one of the key factors that would earn millions for the industry.

Hamilton stressed that farmers should see that Liburd’s actions demonstrate that he is anti-worker, thus no meaningful development in the sector. He Hamilton noted that the good news is that under a PAM government there is an effective plan for the industry.

He noted that if aggressively pursued, the agricultural sector in the Federation would see immense growth and development.

Stressing that workers play an integral role in St. Kitts and Nevis, Hamilton said that despite the precarious financial predicament facing the sector, his party has a plan to implement after taking office so as to reverse the challenges and difficulties.

He reminded that it was under PAM that the Government of the 1980-95 had shown strong commitment to the sector despite the challenges it faced during that era.
