BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, December 5, 2022 (MMS-SKN) -- The St. Kitts Nevis Labour Party caretaker for St. Christopher Seven, Ambassador His Excellency Leon Natta-Nelson, is thanking the hardworking comrades who stuck by him throughout the 2022 election period and in return he is promising to keep his feet on the ground working for them.

“I have discovered that what people fear most is what they do not know,” said His Excellency Natta-Nelson. “But I have also come to believe that great things are not created alone, and whatever great we have done in this Constituency that is why we are here tonight.”

Ambassador Natta-Nelson made the remarks on Saturday December 3 at the Lodge/Ottley’s Community Centre in Ottley’s when he hosted His Excellency Ambassador Leon Natta-Nelson and St. Kitts Nevis Labour Party Branch Number Seven Workers’ Appreciation Dinner 2022.

“We are here to celebrate the job all of us have done believing in the Labour Party for so many years, committed to the Labour Party, committed to ensuring that one day we will have the ranks of this constituency again,” he told the awardees. “And so for your efforts, your contribution, and your sacrifice that is why we are here tonight.”

Supporting the Ambassador included Prime Minister, the Hon Dr Terrance Drew, Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Dr Geoffrey Hanley, and Senior Minister and former Prime Minister, Rt. Hon Dr Denzil Douglas, all who delivered remarks.

Also present were Junior Minister for Youth Empowerment and Social Development, Gender Affairs, Aging and Disabilities, Senator the Hon Isalean Phillip, Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Ms Naeemah Hazelle, and St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party Chairperson, Mrs Diana Williams-Humphrey.

“I have, since September, kept my feet to the ground and kept working,” stated the Ambassador. “I have, since September, placed between 40 to 50 people on the Skills Training Empowerment Programme, in government offices and private businesses since September, and I believe that would be one of the highest records since September.”

He advised that as a Branch they acknowledged past retired teachers in the month of October, which has been dubbed the Month for Recognition, noting that every October, going forward they will be recognising all those who have contributed significantly to the Constituency of Number Seven, and they are not going to stop there as they intend to make Number Seven better again.

In response to what was said of him by the other speakers, he recalled that when the journey started in 2020 (when he was first nominated to run for elections), he made his way around the then party leader Rt. Hon Dr Douglas, and he left the leader no choice and that he (leader) felt that he made the right choice. The Ambassador noted: “He felt that he made the best choice for the party at that time, and I am ever grateful for that decision. Rt. Honourable, I thank you.”

In 2022 the party leader Dr Terrance Drew, who himself would have gone through similar problems as him, had a word of advice for him every time they met, said Ambassador Natta-Nelson.

“Sometimes I did not understand the advice because all he did was ask questions,” quipped Ambassador Natta-Nelson. “But he was asking questions because he was trying to find the right things to say, and he was trying to assess who he needed to talk to and who he should encourage to speak to. So I say thank you, the Hon Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew.”

Reiterating what he had said earlier said that nothing great is built alone, he told the awardees and other guests that it was Dr Geoffrey Hanley, now Deputy Prime Minister, who since Day One stepped forward and made a big brother not just to him but to others.

“I am so appreciative of him and the love that he gives to all of us,” said Ambassador Natta-Nelson. “Dr Hanley has been the rock to keep us together, and so we are ever grateful for your contribution my brother, I say thank you.”

Chairing the proceedings was Ms Kelvina Salters, who told the awardees that when they look at the results of the last general election, they would realise that while the opponent might have won in terms of votes, it was Leon Natta-Nelson who won the hearts of the constituents.

“That is something we have to build on moving forward - the respect that the good people of Constituency Number Seven has begun to nurture for Leon,” said Ms Salters. “And so tonight we are here to acknowledge all the respectable workers who played a role in ascending Leon as the only choice for Constituency Number Seven.”

At the end of the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister the Hon Dr Geoffrey Hanley assisted Ambassador His Excellency Natta-Nelson in presenting certificates and awards to all the St. Kitts Nevis Labour Party workers who were present.
