Local farmer praises Agri- Night Market event

King Garbo Unika Ajama greeted by the Hon. Samal Duggins
By: Ministry of Agriculture, Press Release

(Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 4 2022) -- Local farmer and vendor, Garfield “King Garbo Unika Ajama” Chapman of Buckley’s Estate says he is grateful for events like the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Marine Resources and Cooperatives’ Night Market which help to generate more income for food producers in St. Kitts and Nevis.

The farmer made the statement during a recent interview with the Ministry’s Media and Communication Unit.

“The Night Market is a positive so we can generate our own economics because food security is a big issue and we have to make sure we could feed ourselves, not depend on [other] countries and move forward as black people”, he stated.

The Agri-Night Market event has been held at the Basseterre Public Market every quarter of the year and provides farmers, fishers, meat producers, agro processors and all vendors with the opportunity to market and sell their locally produced products in the evening.

King Garbo as he is affectionately called, said that the Night Market has rapidly grown into an advantageous feature of the Public market and used the opportunity to encourage the organizers to extend the time of the event.

“Basically we should keep it going every time not only in the night alone but support in the daytime too. I think we should even have it on a Saturday for the whole day and intertwine it with the day time market so that it can go from daytime Saturday right up to Saturday night”, the farmer explained.

King Garbo Unika Ajama is stationed at the Basseterre Public Market daily where he sells locally grown fruits and vegetables reaped from his farm. He said these items and more will be available at his stall on Thursday, 22nd December 2022 during the staging of the 2nd annual Christmas themed Night Market
