Reggae music sales drop for 2009… could it be the recession?

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts- AS the global recession continues, sales continue to decline in a number of areas and it now seems to be taking a toll on reggae music album sales.

No artiste, so far for 2009, who released albums, has passed the 100,000 sales mark. Although Sean Paul continues to ride the front line with 70 917 since his album released in August, his previous album still outshines that many times over as it sold over three million copies.

With only one month left in 2009, the reggae music titles all together have sold 502 171 units, a number which Sean Paul and other artistes have topped last year by themselves.

According to dancehallusa.com, some other big name artistes like Beres Hammond have sold 11 124 while Mavado is at 14 000 plus, Jah Cure at 5 314, Shaggy at 8 845, Buju Banton at 8 000 and Ziggy Marley at 36 152.
