PAM: Current Labour administration most corrupt in Federation’s history

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, November 17th 2009 (PAM Secretariat) - The People’s Action Movement (PAM) has stated that the current Labour administration under the leadership of the Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas is the most corrupt in the Federation’s history.

PAM’s candidate for Constituency One, Glenroy Blanchette, stated that utterances by the Prime Minister and also a number of questionable actions have further confirmed that the current administration deserves the description of being the “most corrupt”.

“We have to note that not only is the Labour government corrupt, but it has remained shamelessly unaccountable to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis despite the many pleas and requests,” Blanchette said.

Blanchette pointed out that despite several promises, the PM continues to run the Federation as if he has no regards for the people who had elected him to govern their affairs. He noted that the PM’s attempts to manipulate the Boundaries Committee so as to fix his interest only serves to further hurt the people of the Federation.

“This is a total disgrace, given the fact that the Prime Minister has been elected to serve the people and residents of St. Kitts and Nevis, but rather he is selfish and his actions tell a true story. I guess that is why the pollsters are indicating that the system is working for the Prime Minister and his government, but certainly no one else. However, they have warned him that he will not win this election and he’s already scared,” he said.

The PAM’s candidate noted that to compound this unsatisfactory situation, a number of employees, businessmen and women, among others, continue to complain about being victimized and discriminated because of their political and social affiliation.

Blanchette questioned the increased deportation of Guyanese and Jamaicans, noting that the PM, who is also the Minister of National Security, is trying to drive a wedge of fear within the non-national community. He questioned the PM on his so called promise, whereby, Dr. Douglas, at a press conference earlier this year declared that there would be no deportation but rather regularization of those living in the Federation illegally.

He said that the examples of unaccountability illustrate that the Douglas-led administration is a Government that does not account and is not prepared to answer to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis who have and continue to pay taxes for the development of their Federation.

“We are faced with a very grave situation in which the Hon. Prime Minister believes that he and his administration have a license to spend taxpayers’ money however they see it fit, without giving an account or explanation to the people. Therefore, the people of St. Kitts and Nevis will certainly have to seek at rescuing their country from him if stability, accountability, morality, decency and growth are to return to the Federation. We will however seek to have our grievances addressed by the courts; not out of fear but rather out of respect and love for our fellow citizens and residents, regardless of their social and or political affiliation,” he declared.

Blanchette stressed that it is this cavalier attitude to the Federation’s money that makes it possible for the corrupt Labour administration to continue refusing to make full and detailed disclosure of the several properties the PM owns. He is also calling for the ministers of Government to stand up and demand answers as to why the PM continues to run the Federation’s affairs the way he does.
