Rotary Club of Liamuiga (St. Kitts) Assists Typhoon Victims of the Republic of China (Taiwan)

Rotary Club of Liamuiga Press release

The Rotary Club of Liamuiga on Wednesday 11th November, handed over a cheque in the amount of US$4,000 to Rong-chuan Wu as a contribution towards victims of the recent typhoon in his home land of the Republic of China (Taiwan).

Following the news of the sweeping destruction by Typhoon Morakot in August, the Rotary Club of Liamuiga extended sympathies to the people of Taiwan via Rotarian Rong-chuan, a member of that Rotary Club.  Upon learning the extent of the destruction, a Rotarian subsequently suggested that each member give a contribution to the recovery effort and asked that the Club match the amount.

President of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga, Laverne Caines said, “Our country has been on the receiving end for many years of the benevolence of the Republic of China (Taiwan).  Although we are not in a position to give on that same scale, we are making this presentation today, confident that the gesture will be gratefully appreciated.  We’ll continue to pray for the eventual restoration of the community that suffered during this most unfortunate disaster,” she assured.

Rotarian Rong-chuan who is also the resident Ambassador for the Republic of China (Taiwan) in St. Kitts & Nevis remarked how very pleased he was that the Club has reached out to his country in this way.  “I am very happy today that the members of this Club have shown this commitment to my country at this most challenging time,” he said.  Noting that Taiwan is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, he explained that the typhoon caused wide-spread destruction, the eventual recovery from which would cost billions of dollars.  The funds he said would be forwarded to the Rotary Club in the community impacted, for disbursement based on the assessment of needs.

President-elect Eustace Warner made the presentation on behalf of the Club.  Mr Warner was also instrumental in coordinating the collection of the funds towards this cause.
