BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Art of Beauty was displayed in all creativity and style at the first ever Joy’s Hair Creation Fashion Show at the Royal St. Kitts Hotel on Sunday, November 15. The event was hosted by 30-year-old Kittitian hairstylist Joy Sweeney-Moore, who is formally of Trafalgar Village but now resides in New York.

Upon arrival at the beautifully decorated and transformed conference room of the hotel, attendees were greeted with a selection of great tasting red and white wine of their choice, compliments of Driftwood. There were also a number of items on sale including shoes, compliments of Steppin, along with accessories, makeup and hair products.

Following the opening number, which saw models adorned in black T-shirt and leg warmers, the show moved progressed with models displaying ‘Short & Sassy’ hairstyles in Island Hopper and Caribelle Batik’s wear before a classy and appreciative audience. Some of the short styles were fierce and were incorporated with blonde and platinum blonde highlights to give off an edgy look.

The second appearance, ‘Funky A La Mode’, gave the audience some creative styles for Carnival with head-turning multi-coloured wigs, as the models were dressed in casual and jazzy outfits. ‘Style Me Fabulous’ was the name of the third segment in whch models were dressed in classic linen designs from Brown Sugar.

Those styles were more conservative and were appropriate for cocktails and even at the office. ‘Sensual Moonlights’ was the fourth segment and the stage was adorned with models wearing African designs by Shakki Heath African Designs. ‘Wet and Wild’ was the next segment, and this showcased sexy and trendy outfits from SK’s Fashion Plus with some models sporting shoulder length hairstyles and others with styles that were not ‘weave’ but the models’ natural hair.

The final segment before the finale was Swimsuit, which really turned up the heat on an already steamy event. Following the event, an emotional Sweeney-Moore said that she was crying tears of joy because she was able to accomplish her task. She also stated that she was overwhelmed and could not have found enough words to express her elation.

Sweeney-Moore is hoping to collaborate with more beauticians from St. Kitts to host a bigger and better event in the near future. She also said that she would return to St. Kitts during the Carnival season and would be operating from Tyrilda’s Salon and executing some of the hot trendy hairstyles.

The models who participated in the event are from S Model Management, Identity Model Agency, Movado Model Agency and Plus-Sized Models. The makeup for the models was done by Diana’s Beauty Salon while their choreography was done by Jason Amory. Guest artistes included local rapper $MI, H2O (dance group) while three lucky ladies won prizes including free hairstyles, compliments of Sweeney-Moore, and free cellular phones from LIME.

Sweeney-Moore got her start from the late Patricia Kelly of Patsy’s Touch of Class Salon and then later opened her own salon, Joy’s Unisex Salon, in Trafalgar Village before migrating to New York. She received professional training at the prestigious Libs Beauty School in Manhattan and in 2006 joined the creative staff of the Asymmetry Salon in the Bronx, where she presently works.

There she continues to nurture and develop her artistry in weaving techniques. Sweeney-Moore would like to salute all Hairdressers, Beauticians and Braiders in the Federation for the years of dedicated service towards the enhancement of Kittitians and Nevisians.
