“I don’t have the hunger to hustle anymore,” says Rachel Price

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE sassy Caribbean Queen of Comedy, Rachel Price a.k.a. Pricey, said that she does not have the drive to travel as often for gigs as she did in the past. Price was the host of Joy’s Hair Creation 2009: The Art of Beauty, on Sunday (Nov. 15) and also performed for a fairly large crowd for a night of live and uncut comedy at Bobsy’s following the hair show.

In an exclusive interview with SKNVibes, Price said that although standup comedy is her first love she really enjoys being at home with her family.

“The older I get, I guess age brings a lot of reasons, I don’t have the hunger to hustle anymore. I’m settled and more into radio and television now,” she said. Price said that she hosts a radio programme on WEFM on Morning Radio 96.1 and recently finished a pilot episode for her Carnival television show.

As reported by the Jamaica Gleaner, Price became an official comedian in 2000. "One of my friends asked me to help out at a club called Metal House (in Trinidad). He asked me to be MC and one lady who was supposed to perform dropped her eyelash and wouldn't come on stage, so I started to talk and they laughed.

“I talked some more and they continued laughing. I became an official comedienne in 2000. After I hosted that first show I didn't go back…I didn't realise they wanted me back. As I was leaving I got paid and I was like 'wow, I could get paid for doing that'?" she said.

The Gleaner stated that Price could easily be described as a hard-hitting comedian, straightforward and charismatic. At the hair show, she spoke about the importance of women knowing that they are beautiful, no matter what, and pulled off her wig to expose a shaven head.

Her recently shaven head was as a result of a ritual following her faith, which she told SKNVibes is something personal that she did not want to get into. Even with a shaven head, price looked radiant and beautiful onstage, which she owes to her self confidence that she says is very important.

SKNVibes also learned that Price satisfied the audience at Bobsy’s with her natural ability of making people laugh on things in the society as well as poking fun at persons in the audience.
