CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (February 10, 2006) -- Villagers of Combermere and Newcastle district will soon benefit from an extended recreational facility. Area Representative and Minister of Health in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon Jean Harris made the disclosure on Thursday February 9, 2006, during a site visit to the ongoing construction of an EC$500,000 multi-purpose centre at Rawlins Pasture in Combermere.
According to Mrs Harris, when construction of the two-storey facility is completed in seven months, the ground floor which will also serve as a Hurricane Shelter would house a computer lab, a complete kitchen and a multi purpose room. The top floor will be a pavilion for use during sporting events on the Violet O. Nichols Primary School play field and the adjacent basketball hard court.
Mrs Harris said the NIA was delivering on a promise that she had made to the people of her constituency for a facility of that nature adding that this was not the first large project the area had seen under her watch as Parliamentary representative.
We have seen over the years the commencement and completion of many projects. The affordable homes project is one of the best on the island, the Vance Amory International Airport which is excellent. We also see our social partners coming on board, not too far from us we have a dormitory which houses the medical students.
"This is because of the owner's confidence in this government, he provided that dorm for the students and further up the road there is the medical school which has nearly 300 students on island. So as your representative and a member of the Nevis Island Administration, we have done much to bring forth our promises to you. We are realistic in our promises and we do not promise anything that we cannot deliver," Mrs Harris said.
Meantime, Mr Lloyd Lescott Manager of the Nevis Lands and Housing Development Corporation who accompanied Mrs Harris on the site visit explained that the construction of the 98x28feet facility had been undertaken by the Corporation and that construction was expected to be completed barring any inclement weather in the next 6 1/2 - 7 months.
This project would tie in very well with this housing project that is very near to the facility. I would like to add that just above we are also seeing the completion of the basketball court for this area and it's close to the school so it will be used by the school as well. The lighting of the court was completed some days ago and it is expected that the asphalting would be done during this weekend and during the course of next week. So in about two weeks time the basketball course would be up and in full use by the people of the surrounding areas Newcastle, Camps, Liburd Hill and the Housing project here.
