…MOH statement misses the mark
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Ministry of Health, St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) and the healthcare sector in St. Kitts are coming in for heavy criticisms after a report surfaced last night (Mar. 3) that no doctors were on duty at the Joseph N France General Hospital and the Pogson Medical Center.
The report went a step further to note that none of the doctors were present within the Emergency Rooms at the medical institutions.
The situation had prompted the Ministry of Health to issue a statement that did not necessarily address the doctors’ absence.
Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Health, Dr. Sharon Archibald said: “The Ministry would like the general public to know that both Emergency Rooms at the Joseph N France General Hospital and the Pogson Medical Center in Sandy Point are covered 24/7 by doctors alongside the nurses.”
She also noted: “Stabilization and transformation must take place simultaneously so changes must and will take place to ensure better healthcare and better outcomes for our patients.”
The Ministry said: “The Leadership of the Ministry of Health is committed to improving healthcare delivery in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. A number of inherited issues have been identified that require immediate action.
“The Ministry has been empathetic and accommodating in its response to these issues and will not allow the positive changes that have been made over the last six months to be diminished.”
The Government is working to have a new hospital facility constructed to provide better healthcare for citizens and residents.
