CARIFTA Team taking shape

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - WITH just over a month to go before the 2023 CARIFTA Games takes place in The Bahamas, the Federation’s team is  is taking shape as another representative has qualified.

     

    Following the first qualifying trials over the weekend, Akayne Samuel qualified for Team SKN by clocking 55.55 seconds in the Under-17 400m Hurdles. 

     

    The disclosure was made by the St. Kitts-Nevis Athletics that aims to send a large contingent to this year’s meet, which is the 50th Edition.

     

    This year’s Games coincides with the 50th Independence Anniversary of The Bahamas and the island is going all out to ensure that the athletes are recognized for their efforts on the track and field.

     

    Meanwhile, DeCheynelle Thomas, who had already been on the team for Nassau, also attained the qualifying standard in the Boys Under-17 200m when he attained a time of 24.73s at the trials.

     

    This year’s CARIFTA Games will be held over the Easter weekend from April 7-10 at the Thomas Robinson Stadium in The Bahamas.

     

    Over the 49 years of the event, it has  been used as a springboard for Caribbean athletes to make it onto the international stage to showcase their prowess. The likes of Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, Steven Garner and Kirani James have all competed at the Games before dominating the professional circuit.
