Akilah Byton-Nisbett resigns from PLP

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FOLLOWING the brutal defeat the Unity Coalition suffered in last year’s General Election, Akilah Byron-Nisbett has tendered her resignation as an executive and member of the People’s Labour Party (PLP).

The former Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Three has tendered her resignation from the PLP with effect from today (Mar. 24).

In a letter addressed to the Party’s Chairman, Nisbett recalled the bold step she took six years ago to run for political office for the West Basseterre area.

But now she has called it quits, noting that the Party, under the leadership of Dr. Timothy Harris, has “strayed” from the founding principles.

“After the Elections, I did some soul-searching to determine the best path forward. What I did realize is that the party and leadership I once believed in had strayed away from its core principles, which no longer aligned with mine,” Byron-Nisbett said.

She added: “If one wants to keep moving forward and upward, one will eventually have to let go of the load that is tying one’s feet to the ground and hindering progress. I, therefore, must state here that I have made the decision to step away from the umbrella of the People’s Labour Party with Dr. Timothy Harris as Leader.”

Since the PLP did not make any significant in-road during the last Elections, there have been murmurs within the Party over its leadership with sources indicating that many of the candidates were dragged over the proverbial coals following the brutal defeat.

“As of today, March 24th, 2023, I am no longer a part of the executive or a member of the People’s Labour Party,” Byron-Nisbett said. “I will, however, continue to advocate and fight for the betterment of the people of Constituency Three and the country as a whole, and I will use any platform I have to advance your cause,” she noted.

In reflecting on her time in politics, the outspoken former Minister of Health said she joined the political world not for personal gains, but because of the “deep desire to serve the people of Constituency # 3 and my country at large”.

“I joined the People’s Labor Party and was proud to run under its banner because it was a party that aligned with my core principles of honesty, integrity, accountability, and good governance.

“I believe that once everyone worked together as a team with transparency and accountability, then success would naturally follow. This recipe did work, and on June 5th, 2020, the nation witnessed a historic victory when I defeated the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Candidate to become the elected Representative for Constituency # 3.

“I was not only the first female Representative for West Basseterre but the first candidate to defeat a candidate running under the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party banner in 75 years. I went into government with the Team Unity administration under the leadership of Dr. Timothy Harris. I was indeed honored to have served with all the members of the team, and we demonstrated to the nation and the world that unity was strength, and we accomplished quite a lot working together,” Byron-Nisbett said in her letter.

She took over the helm of the Health Sector during the Covid pandemic as the Health Minister and provided much needed guidance at the time.

“As we emerged from the pandemic and all were looking forward to a brand new beginning with the reopening of the country and the economy, we were forced into an early election as the Team Unity construct collapsed for reasons that I will not go into at this time,” Byron-Nisbett explained.

She however acknowledged that the people spoke at the last Elections and they sought to usher in a new administration under the leadership of Dr. Terrance Drew.
