McKnight shooting victim identified

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE person who was shot and killed last night (Mar. 28) in McKnight was identified as 32-year-old Bernel ‘BJ’ Whyte of Fort Thomas Road.

     

    According to a press release, police had responded to a report of a shooting incident in the McKnight community, which occurred at about 9:00 p.m.

     

    In response, officers visited an alley between Central Fiennes Avenue and Upper Malone Avenue, where they observed the motionless body of Whyte with what appeared to have multiple gunshot wounds.
     
    Preliminaryinvestigations revealed that Whyte was in the company of a female inside his motor vehicle, bearing registration number P4850, on Central Street when he was accosted by two masked gunmen who fired several shots at him and his companion. 

     

    In an effort to evade the gunmen, Whyte exited the vehicle and ran down Central Fiennes Avenue but they pursued and shot him several times. 

     

    Fortunately, his companion had made good her escape and drove Whyte’s vehicle to the Basseterre Police Station where she reported what had transpired. 

     

    At about 10:30 p.m., Whyte was pronounced dead at the scene by the District Medical Doctor, Dr. Oduntan.
     
    The scene was processed by personnel of the Crime Scene Unit and items of evidential value were taken into custody.
     
    As investigations are ongoing, the police are appealing to persons who might have any information on this crime to contact the Violent Crimes Unit at 467-1886. 1887 or 1888 or the Basseterre Police Station at 465-2241.

     

    Bernel ‘BJ’ Whyte’s death has taken to seven, the number of homicides committed in the Federation for this year - six on St. Kitts and one on Nevis.

     

    The first was that of 26-year-old Javon Grant of Maddens Estate, Nevis, who was shot multiple time in the vicinity of a bar in Bath Village on Wednesday (Jan. 11). 
     
    The second homicide victim was 29-year-old Dequan Maloney of Morne Heights, Bird Rock, but who was originally from Upper Shaw Avenue, McKnight.
     
    His lifeless body was found within the trunk of a motorcar in the Bird Rock area on Friday (Jan. 27).
     
    The third was that of Sylvester Crossley of McKnight, but who was residing at Halfway Tree when he was shot while in a business establishment in Basseterre on Wednesday (Feb. 1).
     
    The fourth victim was 51-year-old Dahlia Hanley of Lime Kiln, who was killed on the afternoon of Tuesday (Feb. 14) while working as a security guard at the Irish Town Primary School.

     

    And the fifth and sixth victims were 35-year-old Jermaine Henry and Denzil Edwards (35), both of Stapleton Village, who were shot by a lone gunman in the wee hours of Saturday (Mar. 25) while among a group playing cards in the Village where they lived.

     

    While Henry had died at the scene, Edwards was transported to the JNF General Hospital where he later died.
