Sandy Point Benevolent Society celebrates its 2023 scholars and awardees

By: (SPBS), Press Release

BASSETERRE, ST KITTS 29 March, 2023: The St Kitts Chapter of the Sandy Point Benevolent Society (SPBS) will acknowledge outstanding academic and extra-curricular performance of its scholars at an event on Thursday 30th March, 2023. The Third Annual Awards and Dinner Ceremony will be held at the Sandy Point Community Centre.

Altogether, students will receive awards and scholarships under eleven (11) categories. Three first form students – one each from the three feeder primary schools of the Charles E Mills Secondary School (CEMSS) will receive the Principal Awards while the CSEC Principal Award will also be presented to two outstanding graduates of CEMSS attending the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College.

President of the St Kitts Chapter of the SPBS – Shermin Stevens, said that she is proud of the work that the society is doing in recognizing excellence in young people. “This year 23 young people will be awarded for their outstanding work and while this does not represent all of the young people who are excelling, we are happy that we can shine the spotlight on them as a means of encouraging their peers. We are also extremely grateful to the benefactors of these scholarships and awards and welcome the new sponsors who stepped up this year,” she added. “We encourage community-minded nationals at home and abroad to consider the sponsorship of an award to enable us to expand the number of awardees as we assist in nation building,” she concluded.

Meanwhile, four students will be awarded the CFBC Principal Award for having successfully completed their programme at the College. Other awards include the Vince DeSuza Educational Scholarship for academic performance and extra curricular activities and community involvement and service. Four students will be recognized under this category – two each from the Verchilds High School and the Charles E Mills Secondary School.

A student from the Verchilds High School will also be the recipient of The Briannagh Dennehy SPBS Scholarship. A new award this year, the Jimmell’s Enterprises Outreach Award will be given to two students as a non-academic/philanthropic award, while the Cassie Hart Award will go to the two most outstanding fifth form students in Science at CEMMS.

Two students pursuing  bachelor’s degrees will be awarded the SPBS Undergraduate Awards, while the winner of the SPBS Ridley Guishard Memorial Scholarship will also be presented to the student from Sandy Point who satisfied the other criteria for this award.

Awards for students pursuing a Masters degree will be made in the name of The SPBS Sir Hugh and Lady Rawlins Scholarship and will be awarded to a past student of CEMSS, while the SPBS Verchilds High School Graduate Scholarship will go to a former student of that school also pursuing a Master’s degree.

The awards ceremony will be witnessed by community leaders and other specially invited guests and will be followed by a dinner event.
