Details on the latest homicide victim

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

Five-point Strategic Plan to be implemented

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - POLICE have identified the victim of Tuesday afternoon’s (June 6) shooting incident in Dorset Park as 31-year-old Vaughn Parris, who was discovered lying in the street.

Parris was the 16th homicide victim for the year and the second to be reported on Tuesday.

According to the Police Force, the incident occurred between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.; and after receiving reports of a shooting incident, officers responded and found “Mr. Parris laying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds about the body”.

A short time later he was pronounced dead.

That incident caused public outcry as it was the fourth homicide reported in the span of 24 hours, highlighting the spate of gun violence affecting the Federation in recent months.

Commissioner of Police James Sutton conceded that there is an uptick in the number of homicides, as 16 of them have already been reported for 2023 which surpasses the 11 reported last year.

To combat the growing problem, the Government and the Police Force have introduced a five-point plan: Increased security presence in our communities through various methods; Further engagement of regional and international security experts to work along with our Forces; Strengthening of the intelligence capabilities of the security forces; Expansion of the CCTV infrastructure islandwide; and Enhancement of evidence gathering capabilities to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.

Commenting on the crime situation, Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Dr. Terrance Drew said, “Crime reduction requires the input and efforts of all of us. I therefore appeal to the general public to cooperate with the security forces.”

In addition, he stated that the Cabinet would move to the National Assembly to increase the punishment for persons found with illegal firearms.

According to the St. Kitts-Nevis Information Service (SKNIS), the Firearms (Amendment) Bill 2023 would be one of two first read bills for Parliament on Monday.

The SKNIS also stated that Dr. Drew would move the bill, which would seek to, among other things, “amend the Firearms Act cap. 19.05 and for matters connected therewith. In a nutshell, the Bill is intended to increase the maximum penalty to 25 years of imprisonment with or without hard labour for a conviction in a court of law for breaches committed under the Firearms Act”.
