BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - ANOTHER illegal firearm is off the streets of the Federation.
A press release from the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) informed that “during a routine mobile patrol and search along a road in Spooners, Cayon” on Monday (June 5) between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.,, officers had discovered an illegal firearm and a number of ammunition.
It also stated: “The Crime Scene Unit processed the scene and found a bag concealed by household debris that contained one (1) .38 Special Revolver with a number of rounds in its barrel.”
The weapon was subsequently taken into custody for further processing.
The RSCNPF is appealing to members of the public for their assistance in this and all other matters involving the breaking of the law, noting that cooperation and collaboration provide immense assistance with solving crimes.
Editor’s Note: Once again, press releases coming out of the RSCNPF can be misleading by the usage of wrong words or phrases. In this instance, it is the word used in the headline of the abovementioned article.
It was headlined “ILLEGAL GUN RECOVERED IN SPOONERS, CAYON”.
Recover means to get back or regain. Did the police lose a firearm? If so, when and wherefrom?
Also in the said press release was “…a bag concealed by household debris that contained one (1) .38 Special Revolver with a number of rounds in its barrel”.
Only recently I had written and published a commentary headlined “Press Releases and Journalism Dogmas”. In that article, I explained that a cylinder, also known as ‘the wheel’, is where one puts the ammunition, while barrel is a straight-shooting tube of a firearm, usually made of rigid high-strength metal, through which a contained rapid explosion of high-pressure gases is formed to propel a projectile out of the muzzle at a high velocity.
