Mr. Wayland Vaughan CSM who hails from Keys Village has risen to heights in the annals of history in St. Kitts/Nevis, securing the second highest national award Companion of the Star of Merit for over four decades of outstanding contribution and leadership in the field of education.
His teaching career commenced at the Basseterre Boy’s school in 1975-1976, Cayon High School 1976-1977 and the Saddlers All age School from 1977 to 1978.
His love for the technical field propelled him to seek higher education at the Morne Technical College, St. Lucia, graduating with honors and the UTECH (University of Technology) Jamaica, where he was documented in the archives, as being the only student who graduated with honors in construction technology in the 1986-89 cohort of students. His name is well established in the region, possibly earning him position as a table leader in the marking of CXC papers in the technical field.
Leadership has always been a hallmark for Mr. Vaughan hence it is not surprising that he was afforded the opportunity and the privilege to head the technical department at the Basseterre High School From 1979-1996.
After a highly commendable job as department Head, He was saddled with the responsibility of becoming the deputy principal of the Basseterre High School from 1996-2004. His immeasurable and unparalleled success as deputy, catapulted him almost automatically at the helm of the institution from 2004-2006.
Testimonies from past students, unearth a plethora of very inspiring qualities regarding Mr. Wayland Vaughan. He was our local brand of Mr. Clarke (from the movie lean on me) a voice for the voiceless, a father for the fatherless a benefactor for the less fortunate. “He was just a true champion, our hero and the best principal Basseterre High school has ever had,” as one student stated and endorsed by many others on Facebook. Colleagues and parents alike revere him as a fearless, fair, compassionate, committed, honest and trustworthy leader.
Outside of the realm of academia and his professional life, he was an avid sportsman. His passion and skill for cricket secured an enviable position on many a cricket and football teams including, the Keys, BHS and the UTEC in Jamaica. Being the coach for BHS, Mr. Vaughan’s inspirational and insightful tutelage is responsible for many of the young men making it the National football team and our very own Atiba Harris who excelled at football on the international landscape in the major league soccer.
Mr. Wayland Vaughan was seconded to NHC where he served with distinction 2006-2011 as the General Manager and still holds the track record to date, of having the most homes built for our citizens.
After retiring from Government service in 2011, in 2012, he was sought after by The Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College, being the fittest person to work with the youth in his area of expertise. The technical wing to be more specific, of the CFBC is extremely fortunate to have employed Mr. Wayland Vaughan as a lecturer, where he presently imparts very professionally and efficiently, his skills in the area of construction technology. The students who interface with him in this course benefit immensely not only from his theoretical knowledge but also from the wealth of experience he would have gained in the real world.
In an interview with Mr. Vaughan, it is evident that he is very spiritual and gives God all the glory as he recalls having asked for wisdom on a daily basis. He also attributes his success to the Cayon SDA Church, where his leadership skills were honed. Many thanks is extended to Mrs Rita Cable and the then staff of Basseterre High School for their invaluable support and cordial relations which paved the way for his success. This humble giant is also grateful for the contributions of his loving wife, Mrs. Lucine Pemberton- Vaughn whom he speaks about passionately, his family, friends, parents and well-wishers alike but will like to pay homage in a special way to his two elder sisters; Ms Ismay Hewitt and Ms Donna Evelyn Vaughan who would have assisted greatly in the molding and shaping of his life.
Today, we salute you, Sir Wayland Vaughan, CSM for the invaluable, sacrificial and professional approach you would have brought not only to the field of education, but wherever you worked. Lives were impacted and transformed as a result of you, Mr. Vaughan, a bonafide, nationalistic, conscientious and a trail blazer in so many respects.
