BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A Supervisor of the YES programme received a slap on the wrist for stealing a quantity of items from one of the offices of the Attorney General’s (AG) Chambers.

Jermaine Alexis Carty of Willett Project in St. Paul’s appeared before Magistrate Simone Bullen-Thompson at the Basseterre Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (Nov. 25) to answer to charges of breaking into the Office of the Parliamentary Counsel at Government Headquarters on Church Street, Basseterre and stealing a quantity of pens, headphones and a computer mouse.

According to the facts of the case, while employed in the Maintenance Section at Government Headquarters, Carty, sometime between January 9-10, 2007, broke into the Office of the Parliamentary Counsel and removed the items. The break-in and theft were reported to the police by the AG, the Hon. Dennis Merchant.

Corporal Carl Greaux of the Criminal Investigation Department conducted the investigation and told the court that evidence led him to execute a search warrant on Carty’s home on January 15, 2007.

In his explanation to the court, Greaux said the search resulted in the police finding the stolen items in Carty’s bedroom. He was arrested on the same day of the search and subsequently charged on January 17, 2007.

The stolen items were examined by a number of lawyers from the AG’s Chambers, who identified them as their own.
Carty was convicted and fined $800 payable in two months or serve a three-month prison term if in default.
