Thursday, November 26 – Students from the Claudia Creque Educational Centre and the Enis Adams Primary School dominated this year’s Arbour Day poetry competitions held under the theme, ‘You’re just in Time to Plant A Tree in 2009’.

The National Parks Trust poetry competition was part of activities leading up to this year’s Arbour Day which was observed in the Territory on November 20 with an official ceremony at the Cedar International School.

The Enis Adams Primary School swept the five to eight year category with Keon Penn, Zahra Williams and Chelsea Hodge capturing the first, second and third prizes respectively.

In the 13 to 16 year category Claudia Creque Educational Centre’s Andrea Legair, Deanna Fahie and Nikaida Wheatley secured the top three prizes in that order.

In the nine to 12 year category Johanna Kerins, of Cedar International School won the first prize, A’aliyah Lanns of the Ivan Dawson Primary School received the second prize and the third prize went to Camisha McLeary, of the Francis Lettsome Primary School.

Deputy Director for the National Parks Trust Mrs. Esther Georges was very pleased with the schools’ showing and extended her congratulations to all the students for their brilliant work.

“This annual competition seeks to accomplish two goals. It provides an opportunity for students to explore the medium of poetry as a form of expression while learning about the important role trees play in their lives,” Mrs. Georges said.

Winners of the radio trivia quiz hailed from various schools throughout the Territory.  They are Sharonda Pickering, Malissa Ragnath, and Rekeela Turnbull of the Elmore Stoutt High School; Sherba Williams of the Ebenezer Thomas Primary School; Ebony Brown of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College; Ricardo Ragnath of the Alexandrina Maduro Primary School, Shanica Barry of the Robinson O’Neal Memorial School and Malik Jones of the Althea Scatlliffe Primary School.

The National Parks Trust Arbour Day poetry competition and Radio Trivia Quiz serve as a vehicle for persons to reflect upon and share reforestation activities using creative, artistic and original means.   Through these activities, the National Parks Trust endeavours to stimulate greater public interest in the importance of trees within the community and the Territory’s eco-system.
