Police making gains in reducing recent robberies and break-ins

ACP Andre Mitchell
By: (SKNIS), Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 21, 2023 (SKNIS): The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has promised not to become complacent in the fight against crime.

In referencing the reduced statistics of 2023 compared to 2022, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Andre Mitchell said that the men and women of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force will not become complacent.

The recorded number of robberies and break-ins for 2023 is below the numbers recorded during the comparative period last year as the police move to consolidate recent gains in solving crimes.

“With respect to robberies, we are down by 24 percent, break-ins we are down by 33 percent,” said Andre Mitchell, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) responsible for Criminal Investigations, on Wednesday’s (July 19) edition of the radio and television programme InFocus.

There has been a spike in the number of robberies and break-ins in recent weeks, but ACP Mitchell indicated that the police have had several breakthroughs that are helping to contain such cases.

“First of all, we have arrested a number of persons for robberies and break-ins. We intend to arrest more persons and that information will be made available to you (the public) shortly,” he stated. “Of course, we would have put forward our strategic patrol which we think is working and helping to slow down the rate of crime.”

Mr. Mitchell added that information on how to avoid being a victim of a robbery is being shared with businesses and individuals. He also expressed that the use of surveillance cameras including the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) programme has proven successful.

“We still believe that we have to be proactive, and we believe that by taking the criminal element out of it, making people responsible for their crime by arresting people ... this will stem the flow of other crimes,” he stated.
