    Monday, November 30 – The Virgin Islands for the first time will host the 41st Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) Annual General Meeting which will be held at the Treasure Isle Hotel from December 2 to 4.

    The meeting will bring together educators and officials from around the region.  Minister of Education and Culture Hon. Andrew Fahie in a statement delivered in the House of Assembly on November 24 said over 60 delegates will attend the meeting.  “I thank all the officials of CXC for having the confidence to hold the Caribbean Examination Council’s 41st Annual General Council meeting here in the Territory. 

     

    This is a great boost for our Territory both educationally and economically,” he said.
    Hon. Fahie also congratulated the council on its anniversary. “CXC is also celebrating its 30th anniversary since the first examination in 1979 and it is fitting that I pause to offer congratulations to the council on this milestone,” Minister Fahie said.

     

    He added, “The Council has come a long way and has served this region well and is now at the place where it is repositioning itself to become even more relevant in today’s world.”

     

    On Wednesday, December 2 the Chairman, CXC Professor E. Nigel Harris accompanied by other CXC Officials and the recipients of the CXC outstanding award will make courtesy calls on His Excellency the Governor Mr. David Pearey, Deputy Premier, Hon. Dancia Penn OBE, QC, and Minister of Education and Culture Hon. Andrew Fahie and Deputy Governor Mrs. Inez Archibald.

     

    The annual general meeting will commence on Thursday, December 3 with the School Examination Council Meeting at 9:00 a.m.  At this meeting the CXC Registrar Dr. Didacus Jules will present the 2009 Annual Report.  In the evening the opening ceremony will be held at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College’s Auditorium at 7:00 p.m.   
     
    At this ceremony, 16 students from across the region will receive awards for their outstanding performance at the Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) levels.
     
    The session will culminate on Friday, December 4 with a meeting of the council in which a number of reports will be laid on the table including the reports on the 2008 CXC meeting and CXC National Committees.  A press conference to discuss the outcome of the meeting will be held at the Treasure Isle Hotel at 2:30 p.m.
     
    The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) is a regional examining body that provides examinations for secondary and post-secondary candidates in Caribbean countries. CXC offers a wide range of subjects in academic, technical and vocational areas for candidates of varying ages, abilities and interests from the English-speaking Caribbean, the Netherlands Antilles and Suriname. 
     
    The council’s mission is to provide the region with syllabuses of the highest quality; valid and reliable examinations and certificates of international repute for students of all ages, abilities and interests; and services to educational institutions in the development of syllabuses, examinations and examinations administration in the most cost-effective way.
