BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, FEBRUARY 20TH 2006 - Weekends continue to be challenging for aviation officials at the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport as the Government and Airport Authority await the completion of the multi-million dollar expansion project by the end of the year.
The Air Traffic Control Tower, airport management personnel, airline attendants and security officers were kept busy on Saturday as regional and international flights landed Saturday afternoon.
The Communication Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister captured four jets - Alliance (operated by US Airways from Philadelphia-Pennsylvania), SkyService from Toronto, Canada, and American Airlines from Miami and smaller regional aircraft and corporate jets on the airport's tarmac with Miami Air taking off for Florida.
The Airport also serviced several American Eagle, LIAT, WINAIR, Caribbean Star and Caribbean Sun flights along with a second US Airways flight from North Carolina and the weekly Excel Airways flight from London-Gatwick, in addition to the several corporate jets.
The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Government's strategic development plan continue to bear fruit with the completion of the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, the Angelus Hotel, the refurbished Frigate Bay Golf Course, coupled with marketing and promotional campaigns by the St. Kitts Tourism Authority and other stakeholders in the industry.
The airport expansion will see the construction of extended aircraft parking apron to accommodate six wide-bodies jets at the same time, a parallel taxiway and a new fuel farm.
