    Premier Amory receives cheque from Ambassador Mr. John Liu
    Charlestown Nevis (February 20, 2006)
    The people of Nevis can attest to the Administration's commitment of continued improvement when on Friday 17, the Performing Arts Multipurpose Centre became one step closer to reality when the Nevis Island Administration was the proud recipient of US$1million from the Republic of China on Taiwan, for the construction of the Centre.
    During a brief ceremony held at the Administration's Building at Bath Plain, which was graced with the presence of Members of the Nevis Island Cabinet as well as a delegation of 12 persons from the Republic of China on Taiwan, it saw the Ambassador, His Excellency Mr. John Liu delivering the cheque to Premier, the Hon Mr. Vance Amory.
     
    In presenting the donation, His Excellency Mr. Liu expressed his honour to represent his government in delivering the donation to the island.  "It is well known that St. Kitts and Nevis is a twin island paradise full of history and cultural heritage," said Mr. Liu adding, "In recent years under Premier Amory's Administration, Nevis had made tremendous progress in the promotion of tourism and cultural activities.  The construction of the performing arts multipurpose centre will certainly enhance the cultural activities and enrich the cultural life of your people."
     
    The Ambassador noted that his government was pleased to share the vision of the Federation, particularly the Nevis Island Administration and expressed that the donation was a symbol of true friendship between the two countries and a blessing to the people of Nevis.  He also took the opportunity to announce, "in addition to the above donation, my government has agreed to provide a soft loan in the amount of US$2 million for the project."

    Premier Amory, in accepting the donation said that he felt very grateful and humbled by the donation which Ambassador Liu had given to the Nevis Island Administration for the use of the people of Nevis.  "I want to extend on behalf of the people of Nevis sincere gratitude and thanks for this contribution," said Mr. Amory.
     
    He explained that the funds would be used to fund the centre which would comprise of a state of the art theatre, a conference room to facilitate the hosting of local and regional conferences and some of the funds would be allocated to the upgrade of sporting facilities.
     
    "The Nevis Island Administration has begun a dynamic policy to provide opportunities for the development of the indigenous cultural heritage in the schools of Nevis and the response of the children has been overwhelming," said Premier Amory.  "The programme in our schools includes the teaching of drama, dance, music and singing and the appreciation of cultural issues as they relate to the cultural heritage of Nevis."
     
    The Minister of Tourism and Culture, the Hon Mr. Malcolm Guishard also expressed thanks on behalf of his Ministry and in particular, the people of Nevis, saying, "I would like on behalf of my ministry, the Ministry of Culture, the ministry which would have oversight of this facility and the people of Nevis on a whole who will benefit from this, to say thank you for this kind donation."

    Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Mr. Laurie Lawrence received the cheque from Premier Amory at the end of the ceremony.
