Government of St. Kitts and Nevis continues to prioritize enhancing the accessibility and affordability of education

PS Sherilita Dore-Tyson
By: (SKNIS), Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 30, 2023 (SKNIS): The commitment of the St. Kitts and Nevis Government to improving the accessibility and affordability of education for its citizens remains steadfast. The most recent evidence of this commitment was demonstrated on August 30, as seven deserving recipients received scholarships for their pursuit of advanced studies.

During the awards ceremony held at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort on August 30, Sherilita Dore-Tyson, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sustainable Development, emphasized the significance of this endeavor.

“The establishment of this scholarship programme was endorsed by the Federal Cabinet in 2022 to improve capacity for systematic sustainable development in the country through technical training that will build the capacity in existing and future government staff,” said Permanent Secretary Dore-Tyson. [This will be done] in areas such as Geographic Information Systems; Land-use Planning; Sustainable Land Management; Climate Change, Climate Smart Agriculture and Environmental Management.”

PS Dore-Tyson expressed the team's excitement regarding the programme’s potential to bring about a positive impact on the lives of the scholarship recipients.

We at the Ministry of Sustainable Development are excited about the positive impact this programme can and will have in the lives, careers and families of the seven individuals selected to receive the scholarships,” she said. “We are even more excited about it for what it means for the sustainable development of our country, as the seven awardees will be bonded to make a national contribution through employment with the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis for three (3) years following their course of study.”

The permanent secretary highlighted that the cooperative framework of this scholarship initiative propels our progress towards key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), notably Goal #4: Quality Education and Goal #17: Partnerships. Crucial to our endeavours will be the ongoing collaboration with the Human Resource Management Department on both islands.

Additionally, we will collaborate with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Technical Working Group of the project, and the project's Steering Committee to guarantee the efficient management of the scholarships for the upcoming two-year period.

She extended gratitude to all stakeholders, with special recognition to project partners, for their pivotal role in the program's successful execution.
