Police hunt for escaped juvenile

Basseterre Police Station

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – LAWMEN are on the hunt for a juvenile who escaped from the Basseterre Police Station on the morning of Saturday, November 28.

Information reaching SKNVibes states that a teenager from Newtown escaped from police custody by jumping through a window at the Basseterre Police Station after he was charged with carrying abroad an offensive weapon.

Prior to his daring escape, the juvenile was apprehended by the police at about 4:00 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 28) in the vicinity of New Ponds Site, where a resident reported that someone had broken the glass on one of her doors and was trying to enter the apartment.

“It was shortly after 3:00 in the morning when I heard the sound of someone tampering with the lock on my back door. I was in the bathroom at the time, and on exiting I realised that someone had smashed two glass panes on the door and was trying to unscrew the dead bolt. I immediately phoned the police and reported the matter,” the resident said.

Another resident in the apartment building claimed to have heard the sound of someone running to the back of the residence at about the same time as reported by the occupant of the targeted apartment.

“I was in my bed, but not asleep, when I heard like somebody running from the front to the back of the yard. It was sometime after 3:00 a.m. I however later learnt that morning that a thief or thieves had destroyed the glass to my neighbour’s apartment door in an attempt to gain entry. I also realised that the security light to the rear of the building was off, and, on checking, I discovered that the bulb was not tightly screwed into the socket…This had to be the work of the thief so that he could have operated under darkness.”

This media house also learnt that after the police had visited the scene, they drove around the immediate surroundings and saw the juvenile. They approached him and questioned his presence in the area. However, when a search of his person was conducted the officers found that he had two knives hidden in his pants waist.

He was arrested, taken to the station and charged; but while there, he successfully escaped from the lawmen.

In recent months, many residents of New Ponds Site have reported that their homes were broken into, and some were done during the day while they were at work. One resident suggested that police patrols should frequent the area at intervals, both day and night.
