BVI GIS Press Release
Wednesday, December 2- Residents of Baughers Bay will now be able to enjoy their recreation ground which was re-opened last week by Minister of Education and Culture Honourable Andrew Fahie and Minister of Natural Resource and Labour and Sixth District Representative Honourable Omar Hodge.

During the ceremony on November 27 Honourable Hodge gave a historical background of the Baughers Bay field.  He told the gathering, which included students and teachers of the Alexandrina Maduro Primary School, that the land was donated to the Government by the Maduro family.

Honourable Hodge also expressed his happiness with the project. “I am very happy to be here today re-opening this recreation ground.  This is just the first phase of this project because I want to cover the court and put in the proper surface so that the youth can play safely without injuries.”

“We are preparing our children for the world and if we are preparing them for that we have to put in place proper and comfortable facilities,” he said, adding, “we depend on this young generation to move the nation forward.”

Honourable Hodge requested of Minister Fahie that the field be named in honour of the late Richard H. Maduro Jr. better known as Uncle Dick who donated the land.

Minister Fahie promised to do everything necessary to ensure that the proper procedures are put in place for the naming of the field.

He told the students it was important for them to know their history so that they can appreciate what has been given to them by persons such as the Maduro family.  “It is important that you know your history so that when you see the Maduro family you give them their due respect,” he said.

He urged the students to take care of the facility.  “Students stay focused and take care of the field so that you can enjoy it at all times.  You must have pride in yourselves, the facility and school,” he said.

The rehabilitation of the field included the installation of drainage, resurfacing of the softball area with top soil; marking of the softball area and painting of the walls.  Additionally, the basketball court was also redone and the bathrooms repaired.

The Project Manager was W and W Project Management Services and the cost of the project was $269,878.

The mission of the Ministry of Education and Culture is to provide high quality education and rehabilitative services, as well as, to facilitate access to and participation in sports, recreation and culture, in order to enrich the lives of all residents of the Virgin Islands.
