BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (MARCH 10TH 2004)
    – Top officials of the St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce said Wednesday that the opening of the Royal St. Kitts Marriott Beach Resort is having a positive impact on the local economy.

The Chamber also said that the local manufacturing sector is on the rebound following a slowdown in the world economy caused by the 911 terrorist attacks on the United States and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Newly-elected Chamber President Mr. Anthony Abourizk, during a courtesy call on St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil L. Douglas Wednesday afternoon said that bars and restaurants outside of the Marriott Hotel are also reporting good business.

Mr. Abourizk said as the Marriott Hotel is not an all-inclusive resort, more and more of its guests have been patronising restaurants and bars outside of the resort.

He also informed Prime Minister Douglas that as a result of the opening of the Marriott Hotel, local businesses are also seeing a greater use of United States dollars by locals to purchase goods and services.

Immediate Past Chamber President, Mr. Carol Evelyn, who accompanied his successor, informed Prime Minister Douglas that the manufacturing sector, which experienced a slowdown as a result of the 911 terrorist attacks on the United States, is experiencing a rebound.

He said Kajola Kristada on the C.A. Paul Southwell Industrial Park hired 20 new employees this week and is to take on an additional 100 persons as they are introducing a new line of products.

Mr. Evelyn said Harowe Servo in Sandy Point employed four additional employees last week and seven more this week.
