Celebrating the United Nations' 78th Anniversary: A Week of Activities

By: Press Secretary, PMO, Press Release

Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis, October 24, 2023 (Press Secretary, PMO): Saint Kitts and Nevis will be joining other Caribbean countries in a collaborative initiative with the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator’s Office for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean and country-based UN officials and national stakeholders in celebration of the United Nations' 78th Anniversary.

As part of the week-long celebration which takes place from Saturday, October 21st through Friday, October 27th, 2023, a grand Lighting Ceremony will take place at Government Headquarters on the evening of October 24th, recognized worldwide as UN Day.

This event will be distinguished by the illumination of Government Headquarters in a striking shade of blue, a symbolic gesture to mark the UN’s 78th anniversary. It also presents a unique opportunity to commemorate a significant milestone for Saint Kitts and Nevis - the 40th Anniversary of its accession to the United Nations on September 25, 1983. This dual commemoration emphasizes the enduring spirit of international unity and cooperation.

Additionally, this event underscores the steadfast commitment of the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis to its partnership with the UN System, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 17 - Partnership for the Goals. This cooperative endeavour is crucial in working towards a sustainable and inclusive future for all.

As part of the preparations for this momentous occasion, we would like to inform the public that to facilitate planning and ensure the smooth execution of the Lighting Ceremony, Church Street will be temporarily closed from Central Street to Liverpool Row, starting from 12 noon today October 24.

The United Nations' 78th anniversary celebration is a moment of reflection, collaboration, and renewed determination to address global challenges.
