BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - CRICKET WEST INDIES (CWI) confirmed that wicketkeeper/batsman Shane Dowrich has retired from international cricket with immediate effect, ahead of the start of the limited over series against England this weekend.
Dowrich, who is currently part of the training squad based in Antigua and Barbuda, announced his retirement on Thursday (Nov. 30) which is several days after Trinidian batsman Darren Bravo said he would take a break after not being selected for the series against England.
In a media statement, CWI thanked Dowrich for his contribution to West Indies cricket and wished him the best in his future endeavours.
Miles Bascombe, CWI’s Director of Cricket, said: “We want to thank Shane for his contribution when he played for the West Indies. He is a disciplined, hard-working cricketer who always gave his utmost in front and behind the stumps. He had a memorable series in 2019 when he made an outstanding Test century on home soil in Barbados to help us beat England and win the Wisden Trophy. We respect his decision to retire and appreciate it is not an easy one to make. We wish him all the best as he steps away from the international stage.”
Dowrich made his international debut in 2015 against Australia in Dominica. He played 35 Tests and scored 1,570 runs, including three centuries, with a top score of 125 not out against Sri Lanka in Trinidad in 2018.
He also played one ODI in Ireland in May 2019, and while behind the stumps he had 85 catches and five stumpings.
Despite the withdrawal, CWI noted that its Selection Panel would not name a replacement for the three-match Series and that the squad consists of 14 players.
The Series bowls off with two CG United ODIs at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua tomorrow (Dec. 3) and Wednesday (Dec. 6).
The first CG United ODI is a day game starting at 9:30 a.m. and the second is a day/night encounter starting at 1:30 p.m.
