BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – On 7 December 2023, The Caribbean Examinations Council® (CXC®) recognised 11 students for their performance in the May/June 2023 sitting of Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC®) and Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence® (CCSLC®) examinations.
Twice in one year, the spotlight shined on a student of Anna Regina Secondary School, Guyana as the winner of the Caribbean Examinations Council® (CXC®) regional award for the Most Outstanding Performance Overall in Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate® (CSEC®) examinations. Due to delayed examinations in 2022, the Awards Ceremony for that examination cohort was held in February 2023.
Alex Muntaz emerged as the Most Outstanding Candidate Overall in CSEC examinations, completing 27 subjects in this past sitting. He achieved Grade I in 24 subjects: Agricultural Science (Double Award); Biology; Caribbean History; Chemistry; Electronic Document Preparation and Management; English A; Family and Resource Management; Food, Nutrition and Health; Human and Social Biology; Industrial, Technology – Building; Industrial Technology – Electrical; Industrial Technology – Mechanical; Information Technology; Integrated Science; Mathematics; Office Administration; Physical Education and Sport; Physics; Principles of Accounts; Principles of Business; Religious Education; Social Studies; Spanish and Technical Drawing. Alex also earned Grade II in Economics, English B, and Geography. Alex’s performance in Information Technology, Food, Nutrition and Health, Family and Resource Management, Technical Drawing, Industrial, Technology - Building, Industrial Technology - Electrical and Industrial Technology - Mechanical also earned him the award for Most Outstanding Performance in the Technical/Vocational category of subjects.
Naila Rahaman of Queen’s College, Guyana won the award for Most Outstanding Performance in Humanities. She achieved Grade I in 17 subjects. These were Caribbean History, English B, Geography, Religious Education, Social Studies, Spanish, Agricultural Science Double Award (DA), Economics, English A, Information Technology, Integrated Science, Mathematics, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business, Electronic Document Preparation and Management, Human and Social Biology and Food, Nutrition and Health. She also achieved Grade II in Theatre Arts and French and Grade III in Visual Arts. Another Queen’s College student, Abigail Stephanas, earned the award of Most Outstanding Performance in Sciences. Abigail achieved Grade I in all 17 of her subjects: Agricultural Science - Double Award (DA); Biology; Chemistry; Integrated Science; Physics; Human and Social Biology; Additional Mathematics; Economics; English A; English B; Information Technology; Mathematics; Principles of Accounts; Principles of Business; Social Studies; Spanish and Electronic Document Preparation and Management.
Rounding out the awardees from Guyana was Siddiq Gafar of the I.S.A. Islamic School. Siddiq was presented with the award for Most Outstanding Performance in Business. He achieved Grade I in Economics, Information Technology, Office Administration, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business as well as English A, English B, Integrated Science, Mathematics, Religious Education, Electronic Document Preparation and Management, Human and Social Biology and Technical Drawing and Grade II in Social Studies.
Students from Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago took home the individual awards. From Trinidad and Tobago, Deanna Beepath of Rio Claro West Secondary School received the award for Most Outstanding Performance in Visual Arts 2D, while Celando Matchevelli of Manchester High School, Jamaica won the award for Most Outstanding Performance in Visual Arts 3D. Fellow Jamaican, Meira Wohl of Campion College, received the award for Most Outstanding Short Story.
Sponsors continue to support CXC’s Top Awards programme, providing prizes for students and fostering growth in developmental fields. Kayla Wright of Campion College, Jamaica earned the award for Most Outstanding Performance in CSEC® Principles of Accounts, sponsored by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Caribbean. While Matthew Dunn of York Castle High School, also in Jamaica, won the University of Guyana’s Menezes-Rodney Award for Most Outstanding Performance in History.
Rishi Pokhriyal of Methodist Agogic Centre (MAC) Comprehensive Secondary Education, St. Maarten received the award for Most Outstanding Performance by a Male student in the Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence® (CCSLC®) examinations. Rishi achieved Master in all of his subjects: English, French, Integrated Science, Mathematics and Social Studies. Siena Wojack of the Omololu International School, Anguilla won the award for the Most Outstanding Female Student. She also achieved Master in all of her subjects: English, Digital Literacy, Integrated Science, Mathematics and Social Studies.
These outstanding students received their awards during the Regional Top Awards Ceremony, hosted by The Co-operative Republic of Guyana. This year’s top schools were both from Guyana. Anna Regina Secondary School received the award for the CSEC® School of the Year 2023 and Queen’s College received the CAPE® School of the Year 2023 award.
