BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - TO the surprise of many, the traditional National Carnival J’Ouvert Wetdown event had retirned this year, and resulted in public criticisms at a time when the Federation is facing severe water rationing in some areas.
There were three designated spots for the Wetdown event during the J'Ouvert Parade - Bay Road, The Circus and Cayon Street.
Though many people welcomed and enjoyed the return of the event, some others had harshly criticised the Government for allowing the activity.
In its response, the National Carnival Committee (NCC) stated that it had utilized sea water to undertake the Wetdown and commended several J’Ouvert troupes “for their innovative approach in preserving the exciting Wetdown tradition”.
“In the face of challenges posed by water conservation efforts, these troupes ingeniously utilised sea water in their scaled-back wet-down activities,” NCC said in a media statement.
The Committee added that it “recognises the importance of conservation and sustainability, and we are impressed to see our Carnival troupes finding creative solutions to ensure that the essence of J’ouvert remains intact while respecting our environment and water resources”.
While noting that the creativity strikes a balance between “tradition and responsible stewardship”, the NCC commended all for their participation in the event.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew urged all to continue to do their part to conserve water.
“A reminder that the Fire Services and Water Department are providing water to the hardest hit areas,” PM Drew wrote on his social media page.
