Govt. to operationalize Boundaries Commission

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Government is shortly expected to establish a Boundaries Commission with the view of having the necessary report published before the end of the year.

That disclosure was made by Attorney-General Garth Wilkin, who recently told WINN FM’s Kevon Browne that they want to ensure it is completed in advance of the next general elections to give all political parties involved a fair chance at the time of the elections.

“We are trying to finalize that! We were hoping that would be set up by the end of the year, but hopefully within the first couple of weeks of the new year. That is a priority because the intention is for the new Boundaries Report to be published next year, well in advance of a next general elections,” explained Wilkin.

There has long be talks over the establishment of a boundaries commission and when  its reports should be submitted. But, according to Wilkin, the Government is currently in the final stage in getting it established.

“So we are in the final process of recommending a Chair for the Boundaries Committee and getting it set up, and seeking from the opposition who their representatives will be,” noted Wilkin.

Meanwhile, the Government is expected to operationalize the Public Accounts Committee within the first quarter of this year.

According to the AG, the Minister with Responsibility for Government Business, Konris Maynard, is leading the charge regarding the operationalization of the Committee.

“The intention is to get that done,” added Wilkin, while noting: “My priority was the legislative agenda.”
