ST. JOHN’S, Antigua - FOLLOWING a search within His Majesty’s Prison in Antigua and Barbuda, authorities are said to be alarmed over the quantity and quality of contraband found in a number of cells.
The search, which took place on Sunday (Jan. 7) by Prison Officers and members of the Police Force, had found a number of speaker boxes, cell phones and playstation consoles.
The Antigua Observer reported that yey also found electric kettles, metal forks, metal spoons, a large quantity of lighters, a PS3, cocaine, cannabis and nail clippers, among other contraband items.
The discovery has prompted the Superintendent of Prisons, Colonel Trevor Pennyfeather, to not only raise concern about safety and security but also to push for metal detectors.
Over the last several years, the prison has been under a cloud as a number of prisoners had either escaped or died within the facility.
Additionally, the facility has come in for criticisms over its conditions.
