BASSETERRE, St.Kitts - A joint operation on Friday (Jan. 19) unearthed two illegal firearms and an assortment of ammunition within the home of an Old Road resident.School Road, Old Road residence
The illegal items were found in the School Road, Old Road home of Dominique Greene.
The operation was carried out by the Anti-Narcotics Unit and the Joint Security Operations Tactical Team of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force and officers from the St. Kitts and Nevis Customs and Excise Department.
According to a police media statement, during the operation, officers netted one AK 47 Assault Rifle, one Taurus Revolver with five matching rounds of ammunition, sixty-one 9mm ammunition., one .40mm round of ammunition, six .38mm rounds of ammunition, four .380mm rounds of ammunition, nineteen 5.56mm rounds of ammunition, and twenty-one 7.62mm rounds of ammunition.
Police had also found two pairs of camouflaged pants, one camouflaged jacket, and a bullet proof vest.
Greene was subsequently charged for the offences at the Basseterre Police Station on Saturday (Jan. 20).
This latest find comes against the backdrop of the Police Force stepping up its efforts to combat the growing gun violence in the Federation.
Over the last year, there was a visible uptick in criminal activities, with concerns being raised that many of the firearms and ammunition were believed to have been smuggled into the Federation.
Additionally, sentiments were expressed over an allegation made by a high-ranking officer who claimed that monies from the then PEACE programme might have been used to bolster criminals’ arsenal.
