BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -- The escalation of violence in French-speaking Caribbean territory of Haiti continues to grip the attention of the world as efforts are contemplated to aid the economically devastated nation.

Since the brazen events earlier this week that led to the release of over 3,800 prisoners, the country has witnessed a surge in violence, raising concerns about the main airport falling under the control of the escapees.

Despite global attention, significant assistance to the economically beleaguered territory remains elusive, with many merely paying lip service to the unfolding crisis.

Several gangs have formed an alliance, seemingly with the intention to overthrow the government and prevent the return of politicians and ministers currently abroad. International media reports reveal attacks on police stations and national institutions, including a recent incident targeting the international airport following the bold prison breakout.

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM), which convened its 45th Heads of Government Meeting recently, has acknowledged the ongoing violence. Guyana’s President Dr. Irfan Ali, the current Chair, emphasized CARICOM's focused attention on the events in Haiti, stating, "CARICOM has been singularly focused on the events unfolding in Haiti over the last few days."

He added, "The expanded Bureau has been meeting separately with Prime Minister Henry, the Stakeholders in Haiti, and our International Partners, to bring resolution to this highly complex matter, where persons’ lives and livelihoods are at stake. The complexity requires us in these consultations to ensure that a Haitian-led and a Haitian-owned solution may be achieved as soon as possible."

The gang members controlling various cities have made several demands, including urging Prime Minister Ariel Henry not to return to the island as they prepare for fresh elections in 2025, as officials endeavor to quell the violence.

Since the assassination of former Prime Minister Jovenel Moïse, the country has been plunged into deeper economic crisis, exacerbated by a series of earthquakes and other natural disasters in recent years.

The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) expressed deep concern about the current state of insecurity in Haiti, emphasizing the urgency of cooperation efforts within the United Nations to restore security in the country. The OAS lamented the irresponsibility of delaying necessary measures and actions, stating, "Without security, there will be no democracy."

The organization reaffirmed its support for the Haitian people, both within the country and in the diaspora, and pledged to continue collaborating to promote a solution that advances the much-needed democratization process, ensuring human rights and protection for all, and fostering a peaceful environment conducive to free and fair elections in Haiti.
