ACM expresses concerns for Journalists in Haiti

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -- Amidst the ongoing violent unrest in Haiti, the Association of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM) expresses profound concern regarding the deteriorating security conditions in the country and its detrimental effects on independent journalism.

In a recent media statement, the ACM highlights the alarming trend of journalists facing threats, attacks, and even fatal violence, leading to an atmosphere where self-censorship becomes a survival strategy.

The ACM emphasizes the vital role of journalists in providing an accurate portrayal of the situation in Haiti and laments the obstacles they face in fulfilling this duty. It acknowledges and commends the bravery of those journalists who persist in their reporting despite immense challenges. Furthermore, the ACM calls for increased solidarity and support from both regional and international communities to bolster the efforts of Haitian journalists in narrating the realities of Haitian society.

Recent events in Haiti have witnessed a significant breakdown in law and order, with street gangs asserting control and demanding the resignation of key government officials. This state of affairs poses a grave threat to the functioning of a free press and fosters an environment of fear and silence, further hindering journalistic endeavors.

Maintaining communication with partners on the ground, the ACM remains hopeful for the safety of journalists conducting their work in Haiti. Urging swift and decisive action, both regionally and globally, the ACM stresses the importance of addressing the situation in Haiti not only for press freedom but also for broader governance issues.

A concerted effort to support journalists and uphold press freedom can have a positive ripple effect on governance and stability in Haiti.
