BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Dr. William Connor Primary School will be hosting its Miss Sports Personality and Calypso Show tomorrow (Dec. 11) beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the school grounds.

According to Valencia Syder, a teacher at the school and Chairperson of the Queen Show Sub-committee, preparations are going well. Syder said she was told by the teachers and chaperones that the girls are ready to showcase their talent.

“We have a lot of students at the school who are always singing and dancing, and when we first mentioned the idea to the students we received a response of 20 girls wanting to enter the show,” she said. “We then sent out letters to the parents and the number of contestants been narrowed down to six.”

Syder said that the show is a part of the school’s annual fundraiser but it was not held for the past five years. “In fact, our last reigning queen in 2004, Britney Liddie, is now entering the Miss Talented Teen Pageant. That’s how long it has been,” she said.

She said that they initially experienced a few hiccups in terms of sponsorship, but as soon as the word got out community-minded persons came on board and offered assistance.

The six contestants will be making four appearances - Performing Number, Introductory Speech (in sportswear), Performing Talent and Evening Wear, while seven boys will sing one round of calypso.

Miss Netball is Aniyah Fagan and she is sponsored by the Haynes Smith Youth Club while Miss Golf is Aniqua Walters, sponsored by the Hon. Sam Condor. Miss Football is Kaliyana Desuza, sponsored by the Police Sports Club and The Cable while Miss Cricket is Bibi-Fariza Dalloo, sponsored by Subway.

Afia Beresford is Miss Basketball and she is sponsored by School’s Apex Society and Mario Wigley, Manager of The Police Co-Operative Credit Union; while Miss Athletics, Jomilah Dunrod, is sponsored by Dynamic Distributors and Dominoes.

Syder said that the young calypsonians will provide patrons with thrilling songs, cleverly written by known calypsonians and writers in St. Kitts on various topics including gang violence, education, tributes to teachers and the school. Shane Clarke, a.k.a. De Dominic, will perform a song entitled ‘I want to be’, written by Konris Maynard, while Janiro Leander, a.k.a. Mighty J, will perform ‘Start de cleanup campaign’ written by Queen Kibi.

Tahjaroh Stapleton, a.k.a. Fantastic Tahj, will perform a song entitled ‘You need Education’, and Lequan Desouza, a.k.a. De Educator, will perform a song entitled ‘Forgive and Forget’ written by Newris Nital. Dejon Carty, a.k.a. Little Rick, will perform ‘Tribute to Dr. William Connor’ written by Diamond Ace, while Travien Liddie, a.k.a. Mighty Woodley, will perform a song written by Yazid Francis entitled ‘Thanks to Teachers’.

The song ‘Postman’, written by Calypso Craig, will be performed by Calvert Hobson, a.k.a. Mighty Cally. Syder said that the event also has a packed sideshow including the reigning Calypso King, Konris Maynard; Infamus; Rolhy; and the Unexpected.

She said that during preparations for the show, the contestants were involved in a number of appearances on local television and radio shows including Pep TV, where the exposure helped with their public speaking ability.

“I want to invite everyone out to the show on time, because the contestants have an exciting fanfare which is one not to be missed,” Syder said.
